Prolific Science of Mind
Speaker and Writer


Donald Curtis was an outstanding leader in New Thought and metaphysics for over twenty years, Dr. Donald Curtis was the senior minister of the Unity Church of Dallas where he ministered to thousands from the pulpit and through his regular radio and television programs.

Donald Curtis (Curtis Rudolf) was born in Eugene, Oregon on February 27, 1915. He was raised on a farm near Spokane, Washington. His father, Carl Rudolf, was elected County Commissioner of Spokane for four consecutive years. Curtis received a B.S. from School of Speech, Northwestern, Evanston, Illinois, in 1936, and a M.A. from Northwestern in 1937. He was an instructor for the Allegheny College, Northwestern University, Duquesne University, Assistant Director at Pittsburgh Community Theater and Associate Director and Teacher at Pasadena Community Playhouse. From 1940-1954 he was an actor in major motion pictures, television, radio and the stage. He played in Cecil B. DeMille’s "The Ten Commandments".

From 1949-1953 he was a Science of Mind Student, training for practitioner and ministry in New York at First Church of Religious Science, Frederick Bailes’ ministry; and Church of Truth. In 1954 he became minister of Santa Barbara Church of Religious Science, until 1957 when he became Minister-Director of Science of Mind Church in Los Angeles. There he was publisher of monthly magazine The Golden Bridge. In 1968, he became Minister of First Church of Religious Science in Dallas, Texas; originator and speaker on "Science of Mind" TV program on Channel 8 for 36 weeks; had daily radio vignettes on WFAA Radio; and was a guest speaker for various organizations. In 1969 He founded and was Minister of Science of Mind Church and Institute of Dallas, Texas; and founded Science of Mind Church of Houston. He conducted 15-minute radio programs on KBOX and KVIL, Dallas.

He was a noted author and lecturer. In addition to his major books, HELPING HEAVEN HAPPEN, YOUR THOUGHTS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, HUMAN PROBLEMS AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM, DAILY POWER FOR JOYFUL LIVING, THE GOLDEN BRIDGE: and  NEW AGE UNDERSTANDING, he authored many inspirational booklets and wrote numerous articles which appeared regularly over the years in Science of Mind, New Thought Quarterly, and Unity periodicals. His writings have been used as textbooks in healing, meditation, and spiritual education at many churches and centers.

Dr. Curtis's sales and executive and leadership training seminars were popular in the business and professional fields. He was in great demand as an after-dinner, convention, and service club speaker. He spoke and conducted seminars at Unity and other metaphysical churches throughout the USA and abroad. He spoke and taught regularly at the International New Thought Alliance Congress each year. Through the Spiritual Unity of Nations and other organizations throughout the world, Dr. Curtis worked tirelessly for human understanding, international cooperation, and world peace.

An extensive traveler, he spoke throughout Europe, Asia, the Caribbean Islands, and carried on a large correspondence with readers, teachers, and students all over the world. A deep student of world religions, Dr. Curtis studied with the yogis and holy men of India, spending time in their ashrams, as well as seeking out the counsel and instruction of Buddhist monks and Tibetan lamas. In Japan, he studied Oriental techniques of healing, studied Zen, did research in Shinto and Buddhism, the traditional older religions, and spoke at the centers of many of the "new religions" there, including an extensive lecture tour for Seicho-No-Ie founded by Masaharu Taniguchi.

Dr. Curtis's broad background and universal approach to spiritual matters made him welcome in all religious groups. His printed sermons and cassette tape recordings awere sent to students throughout the world. He headed a staff of several ministers and teachers at the Christ-centered ministry of the Unity Church of Dallas.

Donald Curtis passed on to a broader field of service on 22nd May 1997. He will be remembered as one of the most versatile, active, and influential figures in the New Thought Movement over the past fifty years.
